BLER (Block Error Rate) in LTE?

BLER (Block Error Rate) is the percentage of received transport blocks (TBs) that contain errors before Hybrid Automatic Repeat request (HARQ) retransmissions. It is a key metric for measuring the quality of the LTE radio link

Definition:

  • Layer: MAC (Medium Access Control) & PHY (Physical Layer)
  • Purpose: Monitors LTE link quality and helps optimize HARQ retransmissions.
  • The UE or eNodeB calculates BLER by checking how many transport blocks fail CRC checks.
  • If a transport block fails CRC, it is counted as an error.
  • If BLER exceeds the threshold, HARQ retransmissions are triggered.
